Chatswood High School has a well deserved reputation for its outstanding and extensive music program and is particularly known for its school bands.
Our extensive co-curricular music program includes a Senior and Junior Concert Band, as well as Senior and Junior Stage Bands. Our school also boasts a String Ensemble, a Guitar Group and a Choir and many smaller ensembles each led by professional musicians.
A highlight of our music program is Term Music Nights where special guests have included the James Morrison Sextet, The Idea of North and Don Burrows as well as local Primary School Groups. Numerous opportunities exist for all musicians and ensembles with regular performances at the Hawkesbury Fiddle Festival, the Sydney Opera House and appearances on television as well as specialist workshops with visiting musicians. Our Higher School Certificate students receive excellent results with regular nominations for inclusion in the Encore concerts, which showcase the State’s best Higher School Certificate musical performances.
The Band program has a long history of success in both local and overseas festivals. Since 1985 our bands have toured New Zealand, the United States, Hawaii and Europe. Bands and ensembles also tour annually to country New South Wales.
In 1996 the Chatswood High School Stage Band became the first school group to represent Australia at the Montreux and North Sea Jazz Festivals. In 2004 our Concert Band achieved second place at the International Youth and Music Festival in Vienna. In July 2009 the Chatswood High School Concert Band toured Vienna, Salzburg, Montreux and Paris performing at the Summa Cum Laude International Youth Music Festival in Vienna whilst the Stage Band performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. In 2012 the Band toured America.
The choir consists of approximately 20 vocalists. Performances are given at our term music nights.
